IMMEDIATE PRE-EVENT INFORMATION

The 2006 Classic Challenge is fast approaching and a very full field of entries has signed on for a great weekend of motor sport. There is an excellent mix of cars entered spanning 1965 to 2006. A full list of entries appears below.

Among the older cars are Kim Stewart's well-known 1965 Mustang GT350, Robert Buys has entered his father's 1969 Isuzu Bellett and Rami Brass will be driving his 1965 MGB Roadster.

There's a good variety of 1970s cars, including some good old Aussie muscle cars a Charger and an SLR Torana, while other cars from that era include a Datsun 240Z, Porsche 911, BMW 2002 Turbo, Alfa Romeo 2000GTV, Mazda RX4 Turbo and a Triumph TR7 V8 if nothing else, illustrating the very broad range of cars entered. Bill Thompson didn't get his Falcon GTHO ready in time, so he's entered a 1975 Lancer rally car.

Also a 1970s model is Chris Caruso's much admired V8 Jaguar XJC. John Fowler's Porsche is bound to perform well too.

Cars from the 1980s decade include a pair of potent BMW M3s, a Skyline Silhouette, a very quick Mazda RX7 and a Falcon 351 V8. The 1990s cars include the first of the 4WD turbo brigade, with Skylines, early WRXs and a Pulsar GTiR among them.

Some of the recent high performance cars include three Porsche GT3s, Terry Fielding's unique WRX-engined TRF Lemans sports car.  Some of the powerful turbo Nissans will no doubt perform at the top end of the field - look out for rally ace Tolley Challis behind the wheel of the Autowholesale.com.au entry.

Altogether there are 21 makes of cars participating.

Not all locations where competition driving stages are being held are suited to spectators, but two excellent venues are where a lot of the action will take place both days.

Spectator stages are as follows:
Saturday, May 6
Speed Dome 9.15am to 11.15am
AHG Driving Centre 1.30pm to 4.30pm
Speed Dome 3.45pm to 5.00pm

Sunday, May 7
Speed Dome 9.15am to12.30pm
AHG Driving Centre 12.45pm to 2.45pm
Speed Dome 2.00pm to 4.30pm

The Speed Dome is at the eastern end of Eddie Barron Drive, Midvale.  AHG Driving Centre is on Grogan Rd, in the International Airport precinct. Both offer excellent viewing and entry is free. Refreshments will be available at the Speed Dome.

Volunteer officials are needed to help run this event. If you'd like to help out, for a few hours or the whole weekend, we'd be pleased to have your help. It's a great chance to get close to the action. Email to request a Volunteer Officials Form. info@classicrally.com.au

ABOUT THE 2006 CLASSIC CHALLENGE

Two great days full of competition driving stages, with a broad variety of events, including autokhanas and auto-tests on big, good quality surface areas, plus lunches, Saturday and Sunday evening functions.

Several events will run simultaneously each day. With Scrutineering now moved from Saturday morning to the Friday evening, there’s more time for the exciting competition driving stages.

Straightforward, easy to follow instructions between stages - no navigation.

The Classic Challenge is held in some areas normally not open to the public, so only certain stages are suitable for spectators. Two people per car minimum - and either person can drive any of the stages.

Ideal for first timers or old hands. While the stages will get the pulses racing of even the most experienced drivers, the Classic Challenge is an excellent chance for people new to the sport to try their hand in a safe, low-pressure environment.

In past years the event has attracted many first-timers who have later gone on to compete in all sorts of other events.

And for anyone wanting some practice time in their car for other events - the Classic Challenge is the ideal, cost-effective opportunity.

Additions for 2006 include a Saturday night function and extra driving stages.

In over a decade of Classic Challenges, we have refined and improved the event - and with the upgrades for 2006, it promises to be better than ever. The Classic Challenge incorporates 2 full days of competitive driving stages, daily Roadbooks, car competition number door stickers, plus lunches, Friday evening Scrutineering & Registration, Saturday evening function and plenty of awards given away at the Presentation Party on the Sunday night.

Numbers will be strictly limited again and we expect a rush of entries... So don’t miss out - send in the application form now and ensure you are a part of one of the most exciting motor sport events for 2006!

          CHANGES FOR 2006

The 2006 Classic Challenge grows from the well-received format enjoyed in recent years - with some great new additions.

Scrutineering and Registration take place on the Friday evening this year, so two full days of driving can be fitted in.

Plus there's more partying this year! As well as the chance to meet fellow competitors and size-up their cars on the Friday night, we're adding a big function on the Saturday night.

Again, each day there’s no navigation - just short, direct (with clear instructions) transport sections between stages, with lots of exciting competition driving events running simultaneously - so there’s plenty going on all the time!

Cars are categorized by age and engine capacity. Lots of classes means there will be one to suit your car.

WHAT YOU NEED FOR ENTERING

Apart from a roadworthy, sporting car there are several, quite
straight-forward requirements for entrants. The basics are as follows;

The driver and co-driver each need the following:
> A current civil drivers licence
> AASA Club or CAMS 2SE or higher competition licence (we
can help you get the AASA License - no test involved, cost $45)
> A good quality helmet each

The car needs:
> To be in sound, roadworthy condition
> A checked & date-tagged 2kg fire extinguisher (or 2 x 1kg units)
> An approved first aid kit (which we can supply)
There is no need for extra bonnet catches, roll-cages, catch tanks, fire-proof suits, etc.
