"An excellent mix of stages, which suited my car well."

"The rally had a much friendlier atmosphere than other events I've done recently."

Event Report

As they say, The event has been run and won. What a brilliant event the 2007 Classic Challenge was!  Compliments have been pouring in to the organizers for what many are claiming was the best touring road rally they've been involved in. Even the hard working officials enjoyed themselves.

There was a fabulous array of cars entered this year. A full field of forty participated.

The weather was kind to us, and only the very first stage had some moisture on the road surface from earlier rain. Day 1 saw the cars line up at the AHG centre for an exciting circuit sprint, before heading for the hills for the first autokhana course. After a motorkhana then the first run at the excellent Speed Dome venue, cars headed south.

Perth Motorplex was all set for runs on their famous drag strip - presenting a new experience for many of the competitors. Cars had three runs, each followed by an exciting road course also within the complex. Fastest was the fantastic sounding Lamborghini Gallardo Spider entered by Widodo Teguh and Richard Spence, achieving a time on the drag strip of 12.33 seconds.

After Kwinana, cars headed to the seaside town of Mandurah, which would be the overnight stop for the Classic Challenge. The cars were put on display and an enthusiastic crowd came along to enjoy the show.

That night, a motorkhana was held under lights at Centro Mandurah shopping centre. It was a challenge for the officials to get set up in time between shoppers leaving and having barriers put in place and filled with water in time, but it was achieved and a huge spectator crowd arrived to see the cars in action.

Once again, some brilliant driving was displayed - the sounds of the cars echoing off the tin roof - as were the cheers and applause from the crowds. This is a stage which will be long remembered by many.

Every stage during the day had started and finished exactly on time. By the end of Day 1, Dave and Jennifer Kendall led the event in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo8.

The dinner at The Atrium Hotel was enjoyed by all and an auction for Variety, the charity being supported by the event this year, was very successful.

The second day began with an event in Mandurah, before heading back towards Perth. Although the carpark for the second stage had been closed off, someone had moved the barriers and let themselves in, followed by a couple of dozen other cars which blocked some areas of the carpark we were aiming to use. A new course was laid out, a map drawn up and photocopied to be handed to competitors on their arrival.

Having studied the original course layout for an hour on the way there, some felt a little worried by the change, however not one car went the wrong way or got a garage infringement on that stage...

Cars then headed to the eastern side of Perth where the remainder of the day's stages would be held.  Alternating between sprint, motorkhana and autokhana stages, the crews battled it out for the next several stages. There was an attrition rate, with some cars succumbing to the pressure - though luckily, most which broke were repaired and able to continue to the finish.

There had been some spectacularly good driving at every stage throughout the event and many of the results were close-run for results.

A big crowd attended the Awards Presentation Night and the mood was very up-beat with a jovial and animated crowd present. Rally Director Paul Blank thanked everyone involved and went on to present the trophies - for which some of the recipients were somewhat surprised. Results appear below. Congratulations to all the winners!

Be a part of Perth’s best Touring Road Rally

Classic Challenge offers an exciting mix of competition driving stages over two full days, with the addition for 2007 of an overnight stay outside the metropolitan area.

With a variety of competitive stages, including some among the state’s leading venues - plus several unique to this event, the Classic Challenge offers an exciting and challenging weekend of motor sport fun.

There’s no need to modify your car, you don’t need a race suit and the event suits anyone from first-timers to experts.

The format is upgraded for 2007, and we’ll have a night stage under lights, a Saturday night dinner and party as well as the sorts of events that have been enjoyed so much over the years Classic Challenge has been run.

You need 2 people per car (either can drive any stage, but only one run per car per stage), good quality helmets, a first aid kit and fire extinguisher on board. There’s no navigation, but detailed Transport notes in the Roadbook will give instructions on the route to take between each stage.

Results will be calculated on unhandicapped placings this year. There will be plenty of categories for awards, determined by a car’s engine size and year of manufacture.

Our new streamlined system will ensure minimal queuing (though some is inevitable - and gives a chance to watch previous competitors tackle courses).

And a new Clerk of Course will ensure smooth sailing for all!

Participants will be supplied with detailed Roadbooks each day, giving details of the route between stages, course maps and other important information.

We’re also looking for marshals - if you’d like to volunteer and be close to the action for part or all of the weekend, please contact the office.

 Here’s what you get...

For an event with so much packed into 2 days and 3 nights, this rally is unbeatable value. Entering the 2007 Classic Challenge costs just $1050 per car (2 people) - making it Western Australia’s best value for money Touring Road Rally by far!

We have refined and improved the event - and with the upgrades for 2007, it promises to be better than ever. The 2007 Classic Challenge incorporates two full days of competitive driving stages, daily Roadbooks, car competition number door stickers, plus lunches, Friday evening Scrutineering & Registration, Saturday evening dinner and party, plus plenty of awards given away at the rally Presentation Party on the Sunday night.

Plus there’s the fun of competing with a great bunch of fellow competitors, excellent driving roads in the southwest and more.

Numbers will be strictly limited... So don’t miss out - send in the application form now and ensure you are a part of one of the most exciting motor sport events in WA  for 2007.

Three nights and 2 days packed with action and social activities.
Here’s the timetable:
Friday May 4 (night) -
Scrutineering & Registration
Saturday May 5 -
Competition stages day & night
Overnight, party & dinner
