Notes from the Awards Presentation Evening - Paul Blank - Rally Director

Special mentions:

- Daryl Sosa and Stephanie Robinson – for entering a new car they took delivery of the day before.

- Nissan 300ZX driver Stephen Williams’ co-driver, Mike Jovanou who thought the overview of Gloucester Park was the only map – which resulted in a wrong-way because he thought there was only 1 witches hat – the light pole shown on that map.

- Torana driver Darren Wiese for scaring his co-driver Rod Willis by not noticing the Flying Finish at Gloucester Pk and then trying to slow from 140km/h – on the grass.

- Joey Armenti who works for the State Premier who told him on Thursday he’d be going to China this weekend. Of course Joey said “No, I’ve got a rally to do!” That’s the spirit.

- Susan Forte was "glad we had a towel - the car leaked so it would have looked like I'd wet myself", she explained, Husband Vito didn't help by leaving her helmet upside down on her seat, allowing it to fill with water...

A big “Well Done” to all the drivers – even in sometimes challenging conditions, we had no accidents. OK, one car scraped it’s back bumper on the first corner of the first stage, but that was pretty much it. Even though the driver explained what happened, it's still very hard to understand how he achieved it there. And only one car broke down.

We did have some spectacular spins and a few people showed they knew how to do a handbrake turn properly – always a pleasure to watch someone get that right.

Thank yous:

First and foremost – Shannons, surely one of Australia’s leading supporters of the classic car movement. This is their first naming rights event sponsorship in WA.

Lots of individuals to thank for their roles in making today’s event happen… especially in the wet conditions of much of the day.

Clerk of Course – Andy Hamilton

Stage Commanders – Martin McCoy, Ian Mann, Tim Fowler, Brock Mann, Terry Mann Kylie Gorham, Allan Herring and Rubin Sadique, plus their teams of officials.

Special mention also to Natalie Holburn, Priscilla Mann and Anne Douglas for their help over the rally. And finally thanks to George Noble our Steward.

A big THANKS to all the officials who braved at times, awful weather.

There’ a lot of behind the scenes work in planning and putting together an event like this, and as you can probably imagine a huge number of variables. Although we started 20 minutes late this morning I was pleased that we were able to keep that from stretching out. I’ve had some positive comments about some of the news stages – and will be happy to get your feedback by email.

So, on to the results… Provisional. Special mention of our Results guru Ian Mann, who had to finish off the results tonight by the roadside after his car broke down. These results phoned through…

Quote from Murray Armenti (Toyota MR2) describing the Gloucester Park Mini-Sprint stage: "It was fantastic. It felt like I was doing something illegal - like driving a getaway car!"

PRE EVENT INFORMATION:

A sister event to the Fabcar 1-Day Classic held last year, this event will incorporate all the fun, driving challenges and benefits of a value for money rally.

The event will incorporate a variety of competitive stages, all on sealed surfaces, including sprints, autokhanas, drags and superkhanas. It is anticipated that over 20 competitive stages will be fitted into the day, at some great driving venues. There is no navigation, but simple route instructions provided in the Roadbook.

The event is open to all cars of a sporting nature - of any age.  In fact. we're offering a special deal for entries of cars older than 1970 - a $100 discount, making the entry fee for an older car just $470 . For cars 1970 and newer the entry cost is just $570 per car. This includes all competition stages, lunches for two, car door number stickers, the Roadbook, the Presentation Night Party, Scrutineering sausage sizzle and more. Please note that there is a AASA insurance fee of $70 applied to each car.

The event is very straightforward to enter - you need two people, each with a competition license (we can issue these at $50 per person for a 12-month license) and good quality helmets. Either crew member can drive any stage of the rally. There will be multiple runs at some stages so each can have a go.  Your car needs to be in sound, roadworthy condition, and fitted with a first aid kit and fire extinguisher - see Event Regulations for full details.

Scrutineering (safety checks of the cars) and Registration will take place at Shannons in Burwsood Road , Burswood on the Saturday afternoon. Presentations of awards will be on the same evening as the event takes place. Awards will be presented for many different car age and engine capacity categories.

Take a look at the report and photos from the Fabcar 1-Day Classic held last November (click here) or ask anyone who competed... you can expect the Shannons 1-Day Classic to be a brilliant event!

How to enter: To ensure smooth running of our full schedule, the event will be strictly limited. Therefore it will be necessary to act quickly to ensure you secure a place - the last 1-Day Classic sold out in record time, so don’t risk missing out. Complete the Entry Application Form and send it in. You can scan and email the form or post it. Contact AEM on 9271 0101 or info@classicrally.com.au
