REPORT, RESULTS & PHOTOS
The Shannons 1-Day Classic has been run and won... It was a full-on day, with 22 stages varying from long to short, all held in the grounds of the Kwinana Motorplex. Five stages ran simultaneously for the majority of the day, with runs on the drag strip at the end. There was a threat of rain, but aside from downpours while the officials set up the courses, it remained dry for the whole day.
A few crews had dramas along the way, a kerb and a fence hit and a few mechanical issues dogging crews. But the real hard luck story is Andrew and Sue Reid's, where a truck took their car out as they headed to the start. New suspension, new wheel and new tyre damaged as well as some bodywork... They didn't even make it to the start.
As always, we had an broad variety of cars entered, spanning a 1969 Datsun 1000 Coupe to a current model Nissan GTR R35 (from the same company of course).
The GTI Girls team, with Sharon Gunson behind the wheel, had a stand-in co-driver, her friend Lynette Moore visiting from England. Simon Gunson's brother' also visiting from the UK entered in Simon's 'spare' car. From novices to experts, we've had very positive feedback on the individual courses and the rally as a whole event.
A big thank you to all the volunteers, officials and marshals who helped out on the day - timekeepers, marshals, Stage Commanders, observers, scrutineers, etc.
There was some exceptional driving, fast, accurate and thrilling to watch. Congratulations to the prize-winning crews in the event. Category and outright winners are listed below, with links to full results.
Class winners were:
Up to 1990 under 2-litres - Rory Anderson & Natalie Johnson - 1984 Toyota Sprinter
1971-1990 over 2-litres - Vito & Susan Forte - 1988 BMW M3
1991-2013 over 2-litres - Martin & Tessa Gunson - 1993 Nissan Silvia S13
4WD Turbo Class - Sharon Gunson and Lynette Moore - 2001 Mitsubishi Evo7
Outright places:
3rd - Denis Conway and Nathon Mclaren - 2005 Subaru WRX STi
2nd - Vito and Susan Forte - 1988 BMW M3
1st - Sharon Gunson and Lynette Moore - 2001 Mitsubishi Evo7

Entries are now open for the Shannons 1-Day Classic to be held in April this year. Now in its fifth year, this touring road rally will incorporate over 20 competition driving stages, each challenging the car, driver and co-driver. Either crew member can drive any of the stages. Stages will span autokhana courses (but no short motorkhana type courses) through to full-on sprints.
The event is open to all cars of a sporting nature. To encourage older cars we're offering a special deal for entries of cars pre-1970 - a $100 discount, making their entry fee just $525.
For cars 1970 and newer the entry cost is just $625 per car - unchanged since 2009. This includes all competition stages, lunches and drinks for two people, car door number stickers, the Rally Roadbook, the Presentation Night Party, Scrutineering and more. The best value rally in Australia! Please note that AASA applies an insurance fee of $77 to each car. It’s easy to enter
The event is very straightforward to enter - you need two people, each with a competition license (we can issue these at $50 per person for a 12-month AASA license) and good quality helmets. Either crew member can drive any stage of the rally. There will be multiple runs at some stages so each can enjoy a go.
Your car needs to be in sound, roadworthy condition, and fitted with a first aid kit and fire extinguisher - see Event Regulations for full details.
Scrutineering (safety checks of the cars) and Registration will take place on the Saturday afternoon (April 13th). Presentations of awards will be at a party on the Sunday evening. Awards will be presented for many different car age and engine capacity categories.
Plenty of first-timers enter these events, so don’t hold back - if you’ve been thinking of having a go, act now!
Take a look at below for reports and photos from our brilliant 1-Day Classic events held over the past few years - ask anyone who has competed... you can expect the 2013 Shannons 1-Day Classic to be even better! Great driving, great cars, great camaraderie, great fun...
To ensure smooth running of our full schedule, entries will be strictly limited. Therefore it will be necessary to act quickly to ensure you secure a place - many of our recent events have sold out, so don’t risk missing out. Complete the Entry Application Form and send it in. You can scan and email the form or post it.

EVENT REPORT
A great variety of cars entered the 2012 Shannons 1-Day Classic, held completely within the grounds of the Motorplex in Kwinana. Five distinct stages ran simultaneously for most of the day, with cars flowing well through the stages. They varies from straightforward to relatively challenging, and all seemed to be widely enjoyed by the crews.
We were lucky that the wild wintery weather that the following day saw missed us, and we only had one very brief shower to contend with.
A couple of cars struck problems, one regular entrant had it's clutch give up, one touched a wall and one car met with a concrete barrier. All OK though, just various levels of annoyance for the crews.
Some brilliant driving was seen at each of the stages. It's great to see how much skill there is among WA drivers, with really spectacular exhibitions of car control witnessed throughout the day. It was not just a car's power and grip which would see the best results, but driver skill.
Congratulations to Mitchel Clarke and his co-driver Rhys Tatham on their first win in one of our events. It was clear to all who watched that the red Evo 6.5 TME was being driven by a real talent. Well done. Second place was taken by Barry Baltinas with Rebecca Frost in the co-driver's seat of a 2004 BMW M3. Barry hasn't been in one of our events for a while, and showed that his driving skills are right up there. And taking out third place outright was the Subaru WRX STi of Denis Conway and Nathon McLaren. Denis has the honour of being the only person to have competed in every AEM rally since the very first one twenty years ago. Mr Consistency not only in that respect, but in his driving style.
Winners of the Wyldcat Ride competition were Matthew Wearne and Keith Woollard, each of whom had an exciting ride in the big Jag at the end of the day. Congratulations.
A big 'Thank You' to all of our officials who assisted and made the events run so smoothly.
Any finally, thanks to our sponsors, Shannons, Wheels World and Autosculpt Miniatures.

Pre-event information:
Entries are now open for one of the most exciting, challenging and affordable motor sport events of the year - the 2011 Shannons 1-Day Classic.
The touring road rally will incorporate a fabulous variety of competitive stages, all on sealed surfaces, including sprints, autokhanas and superkhanas. Twenty competitive stages are planned for the day, at some great driving venues including the Motorplex and Speed Dome, plus some new locations. There is no navigation, just simple route instructions provided in the Roadbook. The event is open to all cars of a sporting nature. To encourage older cars we're offering a special deal for entries of cars pre-1970 - a $100 discount, making their entry fee just $525. For cars 1970 and newer the entry cost is just $625 per car. This includes all competition stages, lunches for two people, car door number stickers, the Roadbook, the Presentation Night Party, Scrutineering sausage sizzle and more.
Scrutineering (safety checks of the cars) and Registration will take place on the Saturday afternoon. Presentations of awards will be at a party on the Sunday evening. Awards will be presented for many different car age and engine capacity categories.
Plenty of first-timers enter these events, so don’t hold back - if you’ve been thinking of having a go, act now! Take a look on this website for reports and photos from the brilliant 1-Day Classic events held over the past few years - ask anyone who has competed... you can expect the 2011 Shannons 1-Day Classic to be even better! Great driving, great cars, great friends, great fun...To ensure smooth running of our full schedule, entries will be strictly limited. Therefore it will be necessary to act quickly to ensure you secure a place - many of our recent events have sold out, so don’t risk missing out. Complete the Entry Application Form and send it in. You can scan and email the form or post it.

2010 Shannons 1-Day Classic Report
An excellent, full day was enjoyed by the full field of cars entered in this year's Shannons 1-Day Classic. Participants, officials and spectators enjoyed seeing a brilliant variety of cars in action - 20 different makes - completing the full 19 stages on the schedule. Stages were held at several locations, in two vicinities to minimise Transports, with some completely new layouts and a number of well-proven favourites in the mix.
A few cars succumbed to mechanical issues and only one suffered any panel damage (minor enough to complete the rally without issue), and by the end there was a very happy group of competitors. To quote one of the emails received afterwards "I had a GREAT DAY !!! I especially like having the stages at basically two locations, it saved a lot of time driving between stages and allowed me to have two goes at the same layout. Please thank all the officials, every one of them were friendly, patient and had a smile on their faces. Well done on another very well run event."
The sun shone all day - some of the officials came away with some slight sunburn even, perhaps meaning that winter is over...
There was plenty of exceptional driving shown throughout the day - always a pleasure to see. The fabulous drifts from Jeff Ash's Lexus to the amazing late braking by Brett Morse in his BMW M3 and well-controlled power slides from Grant Stephenson's RX7 Turbo - all impressive stuff. And the sounds... Brendan Anesbury's distinctive sounding (loud) Porsche 911, Vito Forte's menacing sounding 4-cylinder BMW M3 and the rasping turbo sounds of Ross Drewery's Falcon G6 Ute each quite distinctive.
We had a great turnout of people to the Presentation Night at The Vic Hotel in Subiaco. Thanks and presentations were made, and fortunately some of the officials also attended, being thanked in the speeches.
Thanks were expressed to the team of volunteer officials, the senior officials, supporters and sponsors for the event.
The senior officials & Stage Commanders were: Martin McCoy, Ian Mann, Brock Mann, Rubin Sadique, Vince Troth, Sue Ridley, Tim Fowler, Natalie Holburn and Paul Blank.
Supporters and sponsors: Wheels World, Exide Batteries, Biante Model Cars, Creating Communicators and especially, our major sponsor Shannons, whose support of motoring for enthusiasts around Australia is unequalled. We are very fortunate to have their support – this is the only rally the have taken naming rights for in Australia. A cheering round of applause confirmed the support of participants.
Awards -
The award presentations began with the Rally Director’s Choice - to quote from the awards night speeches: "There were plenty of contenders. Who couldn’t like Luca’s De Tomaso? I used to own a De Tomaso, so I have a soft spot for them… Then at the other extreme of the Italian cars, Alberto’s Fiat X1-9 is very appealing.
Vito’s BMW M3 has to be right up there. And so does that Lexus IS-F of Jeff Ash. And somehow I find the retro HDT Commodore really appealing.
But as the question was 'What car would I most like to have been competing in today’s event in?', the answer is Rod Willis’s Corvette-engined MX5. And that’s this year's winner."
Congratulations to all the class winners and outright place getters, especially Simon Gunson and Sharon Payne, who said they'd always felt like the bridesmaid and never the bride, finally coming away as outright winners. Well done.

July 19 2009 - Report - Results - Photos

Notes from the Awards Presentation Evening - Paul Blank - Rally Director
Special mentions:
- Daryl Sosa and Stephanie Robinson – for entering a new car they took delivery of the day before.
- Nissan 300ZX driver Stephen Williams’ co-driver, Mike Jovanou who thought the overview of Gloucester Park was the only map – which resulted in a wrong-way because he thought there was only 1 witches hat – the light pole shown on that map.
- Torana driver Darren Wiese for scaring his co-driver Rod Willis by not noticing the Flying Finish at Gloucester Pk and then trying to slow from 140km/h – on the grass.
- Joey Armenti who works for the State Premier who told him on Thursday he’d be going to China this weekend. Of course Joey said “No, I’ve got a rally to do!” That’s the spirit.
- Susan Forte was "glad we had a towel - the car leaked so it would have looked like I'd wet myself", she explained, Husband Vito didn't help by leaving her helmet upside down on her seat, allowing it to fill with water...
A big “Well Done” to all the drivers – even in sometimes challenging conditions, we had no accidents. OK, one car scraped it’s back bumper on the first corner of the first stage, but that was pretty much it. Even though the driver explained what happened, it's still very hard to understand how he achieved it there. And only one car broke down.
We did have some spectacular spins and a few people showed they knew how to do a handbrake turn properly – always a pleasure to watch someone get that right.
Thank yous:
First and foremost – Shannons, surely one of Australia’s leading supporters of the classic car movement. This is their first naming rights event sponsorship in WA.
Lots of individuals to thank for their roles in making today’s event happen… especially in the wet conditions of much of the day.
Clerk of Course – Andy Hamilton
Stage Commanders – Martin McCoy, Ian Mann, Tim Fowler, Brock Mann, Terry Mann Kylie Gorham, Allan Herring and Rubin Sadique, plus their teams of officials.
Special mention also to Natalie Holburn, Priscilla Mann and Anne Douglas for their help over the rally. And finally thanks to George Noble our Steward.
A big THANKS to all the officials who braved at times, awful weather.
There’ a lot of behind the scenes work in planning and putting together an event like this, and as you can probably imagine a huge number of variables. Although we started 20 minutes late this morning I was pleased that we were able to keep that from stretching out. I’ve had some positive comments about some of the news stages – and will be happy to get your feedback by email.
So, on to the results… Provisional. Special mention of our Results guru Ian Mann, who had to finish off the results tonight by the roadside after his car broke down. These results phoned through…
