Well done to everyone after a very long day of rallying. We had our trials and tribulations – some people more than others (a high attrition rate on diffs in particular...), but by the end of the day, we had not a single accident and saw some spectacular driving.

We saw a record field with 23 different makes of car competing, which spanned 44 years of production.

The weather couldn't have been better – obviously our reward after the Shannons 1-Day Classic earlier in the year when it rained all day…

Fortunately we had only to cut one stage today, and at the end of 23 stages there was more than one competitor telling us they were hoping their tyres would last the trip home.

We acknowledge the problem at Kwinana, which was due to late advice (Thursday) that all the trucks and equipment would be blocking our course - so a much shorter course was hurriedly designed. The knock-on effect of that was the timing changed radically. Regular competitors would be aware that normally we have cars lined-up in equal numbers at the Sprint and Autokhana stages, with the waiting spread equally, and no problem such as was experienced this time. We thank participants for their patience. We did ask to get the drinks van moved up to the Sprint stage, however the operator informed us that the Motorplex management wouldn’t let him move...

The rest of the event ran without any such delays - it’s a shame this problem was at the very start...

There are many people to thank, including the following officials:

Ian Mann - Results co-ordinator and Stage Commander
Brock Mann - Chief Scrutineer and Stage Commander

Particular thanks to Frank and his team at Fabcar, our naming rights sponsor for their excellent support.

We certainly saw some brilliant driving throughout the event. While there's an expectation that Chris and Susan Caruso will impress with lots of sideways action, we also saw some exceptional displays of car control from lots of other drivers too. It’s great to see a few drivers execute perfect handbrake turns.

Car of the Event as voted by officials was Will White’s Nissan GTR R32 – which incidentally broke the ten second barrier at the drags.

At the Awards Presentations we made an overdue presentation, for last year's Biante Trevor Young Championship. Trevor who passed away 3 years ago was the founder of Biante Model Cars with his wife Bev – both of them true car enthusiasts. The company has become one of the world's leading manufacturers and distributors of collectors' model cars – and this award is in his memory.

Franz Esterbauer was invited up to collect his award as the 2008 winner of the Biante Trevor Young Championship.

We've already begun developing a number new ideas for future events, some of which have come from ideas competitors have had – which we're always happy to hear...

All the officials thank everyone involved for your support and look forward to seeing you in many more events in the future.

The winners: Lots of comments about the benefit of a lightweight co-driver...                                                                                                  John Fowler was one of the exponents showing great handbrake turning skills

Announcing the 2009 Fabcar 1-Day Classic rally - November 15th 2009...

Action packed with over twenty competition driving stages including sprints, superkhanas, autokhanas and closed road stages... Venues such as the Speed Dome, Perth Motorplex in Kwinana and some exciting new locations will also be used. Several spectator stages will be run during the day.

There’s no navigation, but you’ll need a co-driver to conform to the regulations the event is designed under. Either crew member can drive any stage of the rally. There will be multiple runs at some stages so each can have a go.  Awards will be presented for many different car age and engine capacity categories...

Requirements to compete: Our aim is to make it as straightforward as possible to enter the Fabcar 1-Day Classic.  It's ideal for first-timers to participate in - and still a real test for the most experienced motor sport participants.

Both crew members will need a competition license - we can issue AASA Licenses (just $50 for a 12 months license), or equivalent.

You’ll need good quality helmets and the car must be fitted with a comprehensive first aid kit. Every car must also have a 2kg fire extinguisher (or two 1kg units - at least one must be reachable in the cockpit). These fire extinguishers must be checked and date-tagged, and mounted securely.

Otherwise, your car just needs to be in roadworthy condition. There’s no need for race suits or to make modifications your car. It's that easy!

The entry fee remains just $570 per car (2 people) which covers Scrutineering, all competition stages, the rally Roadbook, lunch, the Awards Presentation Night, trophies, car door number stickers and much more. A fee per car for insurance will be applied by AASA of $70 per car.

Scrutineering and Registration will take place on the Friday afternoon, and the rally will run all day Sunday with the Awards Presentation taking place on Sunday evening.  The entire event will be set in Perth metropolitan area, on sealed surfaces.

How to enter: To ensure smooth running of our full schedule, the event will be strictly limited to 60 entries. Therefore it will be necessary to act quickly to ensure you secure a place.  This event was Sold Out in just 8 days last year. Complete the Entry Application Form and send it in fast. You can scan and email the form or post it. Contact AEM on 9271 0101 or info@classicrally.com.au

Quotes from last year's participants:

"I just wanted write and tell you I had a blast yesterday, the event was run very well, heaps of stages and driving made it action packed, a friendly atmosphere amongst competitors and officials made it the most enjoyable rally I have run in." according to one competitor who has participated in most rally style events in WA in an email after the event.

While another emailed "Just wanted to say a big thanks for organizing and running the event. My navvie and myself had an absolute ball!" and another email said: "PLEASE try to do as many of these events every year as possible, 4 including the 2-day Classic Challenge would be great. I will happily pre-register for all of them next year. It's a really good value day compared with other events..."

From another entrant: "Your events just seem to get better and better. The day had a great atmosphere about it with a lot of people I haven't seen before coming up and introducing themselves. The officials did a fantastic job and the event ran so smoothly thanks to them." and "The one day layout is a fantastic way to go. It would be great to see the Classic Challenge kept with a few one day events through the year."

Plus these remarks: "Thanks for organising the Fabcar event – a really well run day, and a lot of fun.  I reckon that format has a lot going for it, in that you get a lot of track time, some interesting locations, and good circuits.  I especially liked the fact that there were courses to suit all the different types of cars."

And "my navigator and I really enjoyed the day, and we’ll be signing up for the next, and the next, and what-ever else you can serve up."
