Postponed to 2007

PERRY LAKES - With the date already set last year, the Town of Cambridge requested in May that we put in the application along with detailed Risk Management, Traffic Management and Safety Management plans for this year (80 pages of documentation), which was done within the timeframe they requested. In August they sent a letter advising that we will not be able to use Perry Lakes "due to the inconvenience it causes the general public." While there has been a complaint each year about the playground being inaccessible for the day of the show, it is hard to understand how anyone is inconvenienced by such a small area of the huge park closed-off. Interestingly, the Town of Cambridge advises that the week-long Flower Show will still be allowed to take place there...

We expect to announce an excellent new venue for the event in 2007 which will allow us to make some upgrades to the event.

Below is a report on previous Classics in the Park

Following the great success that the first Classics in the Park event was, the event was again along similar lines on Sunday, December 4th.

The event incorporated the two events of Celebration of the Motorcar exhibition and the Charity Rides Day providing a chance to see some of the rarest and most desirable cars in the state - on display and in action.

The excellent venue was the same as used last time - Perry Lakes, in Floreat, providing a shady, comfortable setting to enjoy the cars and the relaxed atmosphere and was acclaimed by exhibitors and spectators alike.  However, shade wasn't in demand much as almost the whole day was overcast with a brief, very light shower at one point. The threat of rain had also kept several cars away. Nevertheless an excellent array of cars was on show as the photographs illustrate. The weather was to blame for smaller than usual visitor attendances too.

Celebration of the Motorcar featured the finest classic, exotic and prestige cars in Western Australia, with marques such as Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati, TVR, BMW, Jaguar, Corvette, Aston Martin and Lamborghini among those displayed.

A special display celebrated the 50th anniversary of the iconic Citroen DS, with a number of these amazing cars on display.

On show for the first time was the latest model Ferrari F430 Spider. The stunning new Chrysler 300C premiered at the show too on the Chellingworth Motors' display. Also on display was the the exclusive Bentley Continental GT.

Other cars of interest includes a 1959 Cadillac Coupe De Ville (the tallest tailfins ever), a new Smart microcar (decked out in a rather special colour scheme), a rare Jensen CV8, some lovely TVR sports cars and an unusual Borgward Isabella Cabriolet.

Among the performance cars are a 12-cylinder Ferrari Testarossa, Jaguar E-Type endurance rally car, Porsche Turbo and a very rare French Alpine GTA Turbo.

If you have an exceptional car, of an up-market make, which you would like to display next year, please contact the organizer, Paul Blank - paulb@classicrally.com.au

The Charity Rides Day offered the public the rare chance to ride in some very special cars. For a small donation to the event's beneficiary, Telethon Speech & Hearing centre people took a ride in vehicles as diverse as a Ferrari, Porsche, a vintage Rolls-Royce, a 1958 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz convertible, and other rare vehicles available on the day. Rides cost as little as $5 to $10.

Rides cars included:
Lotus Elise
Ferrari 328GTSi
Reliant Rialto 3-wheeler
Porsche Boxster
Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost
Rolls-Royce Phantom Limousine
Nissan S-cargo
Renault 4CV '750'
1924 Fiat Tourer

EVENT REPORT

Growing from the success of the previous decade with the Celebration of the Motorcar exhibition, a new venue was found and an additional event added to create Shannons Classics in the Park. The event was a huge success, with record crowds in attendance and a record 235 cars on display.

Perry Lakes Reserve in Floreat provided and excellent location, with plenty of space and shade. The internal roads in the park provided part of the requisites for the new event - The Charity Rides Day, where members of the public could ride in rare and unusual cars for the cost of a donation to the Speech & Hearing Centre for Children. Popular among the ride cars were sponsor Shannons' Goggomobil Dart, Peter Brock's Targa Tasmania Monaro, from Biante Model Cars, a 1926 Bentley 3-litre Tourer and a Lotus Elise. The oldest Rides car was a 1901 Clement and the newest a current model Smart Cabrio.

The variety of cars displayed was also very broad. Event organizer Paul Blank from Automotive Events Management said "With greater space than before we were able to showcase a larger number of wonderful cars. The event has always shown the best of the best, in just prestige marques of cars. Once again this year some exceptional cars were displayed."

Among the more popular cars on show were the 1933 Rolls-Royce Phantom 11 'Pharaoh', showing its ancient Egyptian motifs, and at the other extreme, a brand new Lamborghini Gallardo, the model being shown for the first time in WA. The Bentley display featured cars spanning a 1922 example which was the very first Bentley to race at Le Mans to the new Continental GT.

Aston Martins, Ferraris, Porsches, Jaguars, Corvettes and Mercedes-Benzes were among the many marques displayed. The largest ever display of TVR sports cars in WA was shown and several De Tomasos, including the latest model Guara were shown.

Rare high performance cars included an Alpine GTA, a Lancia Integrale Evo and a pair of early E30 BMW M3s.

The event had the support of upmarket new car outlets. Chellingworth launched the new mid-engine sports model Porsche Boxster at the event in a smart marquee with the latest 997 and Cayenne.

The new Maserati Quattroporte had its first viewing on the large Barbagallo display alongside an array of new Alfa Romeos, Jaguars, Land Rovers, MGs, Rovers and other models of Maserati. And Shacks HSV showed their current range including the rare four-wheel-drive high performance Coupe4.

The Fremantle Motor Museum showed two cars from the Peter Briggs collection which had been displayed at Pebble Beach. A stylish, sporty Hispano Suiza Alphonso was displayed alongside the star car of the event, the 1904 Napier Samson, which exactly 100 years prior had broken many world speed records.

There's no doubt that the event's successful new format will lead to an even greater day next time... mark December 4th 2005 in your diaries.

Pre-event publicity material:

Automotive Events Management is proud to present a wonderful new classic car event - set for Sunday, February 20th 2005.

The event takes place in the shady and easily accessible grounds of Perry Lakes in Floreat.  The two major components of the day will provide the chance to see some of the rarest and most desirable cars in the state - on display and in action.

The Celebration of the Motorcar exhibition will be set up in the lovely parkland and will incorporate displays of around 180 specially invited vintage, classic, exotic and prestige cars. Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Corvette, Porsche, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Alvis, BMW, Bentley, Aston Martin, De Tomaso and their likes will feature.

Several new sports and prestige models will be exhibited to the public for the first time. Chellingworth Motors will be debuting the new model Porsche Boxster, in it's  first time on show to the public.  The Barbagallo's display will feature the glamorous new Lamborghini Gakllardo.  Check back here for details of more exclusive cars as they are confirmed.

The variety will be huge - see the new Bentley Continental GT, a very rare Dodge Charger 440RT, WA's only V12 Ferrari Maranello and a massive Rolls-Royce Phantom. WA's largest ever display of TVR sports cars will be another feature.

Visitors to Shannons Classics in the Park will also have the chance to ride around the special Perry Lakes road course in a wide variety of these special cars in the Charity Ride Day.  For a donation, you can treat yourself or a family member to a ride in Peter Brock's Targa Tasmania Monaro or the famous Shannons Goggomobil Dart. Or maybe a lap in a Ferrari or the 1901 Clement, which is one of the oldest cars on the road in WA. A big selection of very special cars will be available for this great fun activity, including several from the Fremantle Motor Museum. Check the list below for cars which will be available for rides.

The unique 1904 Napier 'Samson' from the Fremantle Motor Museum will be star of the show, exactly 100 years from when it set several world records, becoming the fastest car in the world. This amazing 15-litre car was the world's first 6-cylinder racing car.

The event will benefit the Speech & Hearing Centre for Children, who will hold a fund raising auction and a raffle throughout the day.  Highlight among the auction items will be the chance to be the one and only person to ride around Perry Lakes in the famous Napier 'Samson'.
