EVENT REPORT
There are few motor sport events in Australia where a rare Porsche 356C Outlaw can line up against twin-turbo V8 Nissan Laurel “detuned for the event with just 770 horses at the back wheels” according to its owner. Perth’s Transcore Classic Challenge is just such an event, and now in its twelfth year continues to attract an eclectic mix of entries.
Over the two days and nights of the event there were 27 different competition stages packed in, and an excellent mix of tests among them – ranging from motorkhanas to sprints to drag strip runs.
The differing stages suit different cars, so the Nissan Micra wasn’t totally outclassed by the new Porsche 998 Turbo…
Among the greatest crowd pleasers was Dave Thompson's heavily modified Monaro HQ, and with Dave loving an audience, every spectator stage had the car sliding, smoking up the tyres with the glorious V8 engine noise only drowned out by cheering.
The event started for the first time from the Perth Motor Show, and headed out of Perth towards the eastern suburbs as far as Darlington in the holls, before heading south to the Perth Motorplex where several stages were held. Ultimately cars went to Mandurah for an overnight stay.
A night stage was held under lights in Mandurah, and this was thoroughly enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. The showers of glowing brake pad material from some of the high performance cars was a great sight. But not much compared to seeing the sparks off the Monaro's tyres through the smoke...
There were two all-girls teams (Subaru WRX and Porsche Cayman S) and a number of father and daughter teams entered, one taking home a class win in their 1965 Mustang 350GT.
Attention grabbers among the field included a Lancia Stratos replica, a Porsche 911 GT3 Clubsport and Chris Caruso's very impressive V8 Jaguar XJC.
An ex-Bathurst Subaru WRX was in the mix and the Porsche 356 was the last right hand drive example built. A Lancia Delta Integrale, Falcon Sprint, Supercharged MX5, MGB Roadster and a Ford Escort Mk1 gives an idea of the breadth of variety among the cars entered.
BMWs were well represented with an interesting mix from a 318i fitted with an M3 engine, through proper M3s to a new 335i with modifications which let it achieve a 12.64 second run at the drag strip – beaten by 11.80 from the Porsche Turbo.
Variety was the charity supported by the event this year and we raised in excess of $6500 during the event.
Although there were a few heart-stopping breakdowns and a couple of kerbs hit, but all cars got home under their own power.
In the end it was the year of the Mitsubishi Evo, with an impressive 1-2-3 finish for the model. Congratulations to all the winners - and thanks to all the officials who helped the event run so smoothly.
Thanks to many of the participants for their messages of thanks and congratulations to the organizers.

JAGUAR CO-DRIVER WANTED...
After the positive feed back from last year's Classic Challenge charity co-ride in Chris Caruso’s V8-powered Jaguar Coupe “WYLDCAT”, Chris has decided to repeat the offer again this year. “Who ever bids the highest amount to Variety WA the Children’s Charity will co-ride in Suzie’s place again. She’s not happy but she’s a good sport.” All money raised goes directly to the 2008 Variety WA bash campaign of our Mafia Staff Car 1929 and is fully tax deductible. Last years successful bidder, Ross Bonsel, could hardly believe his luck and surely got more than he bargained for when in exchange for his very generous donation, he not only received 2 action packed days of motor sport and socialising with the other competitors, but went home with a class win trophy and 3rd outright trophy!!
The successful bidder will need a current civil drivers license, be a sociable character, non smoker, and not prone to car sickness or any other condition that can be adversely affected by motor sport. Map reading could help if Chris gets lost!! Competition license and helmet, etc will be provided.
Paul Blank of Automotive Events Management has again generously agreed to donate the entry fee for the event to Variety also.
We also are offering to display company logos on the Jag (Transcore Classic Challenge April 25th – April 27th 2008) and the Mafia Staff Car (Variety Bash August15th – August 23rd 2008) in exchange for a reasonable donation to Variety WA.
If you think you can handle this type of ‘punishment' contact Chris or Suzie on 93592100 Business Hours, with your enquiries or to make a bid.
