             Report on the 2002 Classic Challenge

New Format for 2002

For 2002 the Classic Challenge took on a brand new format as a competition driving-only event. There was no navigation, no lengthy transport stages - just thirteen exciting competition driving stages - held over 2 days.

New Venue

Westralian Airports Corporation, with Automotive Events Management arranged use of Perth Airport for the first motorsport event held there. Access roads, bitumen areas and the grounds of buildings at the airport complex provided excellent areas for competition events all within one easily accessible area.

Classes

With categories for cars of all ages and engine sizes, the Classic Challenge had modern 4WD cars such as Subaru WRXs and Skyline GTRs compete in the same stages as classic MGs and Austin Healeys or muscle cars like the GT Falcons and Corvettes and sports machines the likes of Porsches and Ferraris.

What Did the Event Involve?

Two days of competition driving stages, including sprint events on sections of access roads, autokhanas on big, flat, smooth areas and lunch each day. Presentation of awards were be made at a function in the International Airport terminal on the Sunday evening. 90 cars entered spanning 1959-2002.
